There was a festival atmosphere as we arrived at a well appointed Scarborough RUFC for our tour match; a curtain raiser to the club’s first fifteen fixture against Heath.

The pitch looked good and the weather was perfect. We weren’t too sure what to expect from Scarborough, nor were we too sure how Bees would perform after a night together at Whitby Youth Hostel. We needn’t have worried – Lewis Brook and Andy Niczyperowicz treated us to some exhibition rugby as they matched one another try for try.
Bees started in sprightly mood and took the game straight to Scarborough. Those early minutes saw Bees testing the Scarborough forwards, who were struggling against the blue tide from West Yorkshire. It took just 5 minutes for the Bees tactic to pay off as Lewis drove over for the first try of the game, converted by Nick Gore.
Bees kept the pressure on from the Scarborough kick off and started to get the ball out to the backs. Soon it found its way to Andy who made use of the extra width of Scarborough’s first team pitch to glide past a couple of defenders and score in the corner. The Scarborough kickoff was long but the ball went straight back into the arms of Andy, who weaved his way through the whole field to score a great individual try taking the score to 0-19.
Another Scarborough kick off and another Bees attack. Not to be outdone by Andy, Brooky Jnr went over for his second converted try of the game. Next it was Andy’s turn – despite having Sam in support he was able to go all the way for his third try. Scarborough’s next kick off went to Harry Ellison. Clearly wanting a bit of the action, Harry ran back at Scarborough but their tackler was up to the job and Harry was driven into touch. The resultant line out was won by Lewis and he was off again. Joe Bashforth was in support and he linked up with fly half Nick Gore who in turn released winger Ryan Wilson. This was the try of the match, a fantastic move of free-flowing rugby; powerful running and slick handling between back row forwards and three quarters, worthy indeed of our Barbarian’s heritage. It was good to see the Bees in such rampant mood and dominating in all aspects of the game. However, Scarborough had had their moments and with just a couple of minutes to go until half-time, they had some better possession and were looking dangerous. A promising move along the backs was intercepted by Ryan Wilson, who ran more than half the length of the pitch to score his second try, converted by Nick to take the score to 0-43 at half time.
Both teams made a few changes at half-time but Bees were quicker to adapt and it wasn’t long before Brooky was on another powerful run. As a number of Scarborough defenders converged, Lewis released Corey Spencer who went over for his first Bees try since joining the squad earlier in the season. To Scarborough’s credit, they kept their heads up and were making a few powerful attacks of their own. One of their attacks culminated with a desperate clearance by Bees. The Scarborough full-back put up a high return; Matty Dilworth claimed it confidently and set off on one of his classic runs to cross for the ninth try of the game, again converted by Nick.
From the kick off, Bees drifted offside to give Scarborough a penalty in a good position, leaving the tourists with some defending to do. Despite a couple of clearances, including a fine kick to touch from Ryan Wilson, Scarborough kept the pressure on sensing an opportunity and got their just rewards 45 minutes into the game when they crossed for a well-deserved try.
Further Bees tries from Dom Walker and a final fling from Brooky, who finished the game on the wing, with Niczy at No 8, took the score to 7-69; hat tricks for both Andy and Lewis and a total of 7 conversions by Nick Gore. Great stuff from all 21 lads who took to the field. Many thanks to Scarborough for their hospitality.
