Coming off the back of last weeks decisive win, the boys were in confident mood going into this Yorkshire Plate game - too confident!
A strong wind blowing across from the west meant that the game would have to be played tightly and that’s precisely what Pocklington did.
Playing with the wind but failing to take advantage of it in the first half perhaps due to a lack of midweek training this week Bees were regularly beaten at the breakdown and were no match for a much faster, hungrier side from East Yorkshire who rucked and counter rucked strongly.
24 points down at the break and turning into the wind Bees finally began to believe in themselves and the forwards began to compete. After building solid platforms, two successive moves released Ashton and then Samuel M for two excellent tries with a single conversion into the wind from Sam B.
A further slick move again releasing Samuel M looked like it was heading for a further try and a narrowing of the gap before he was bundled over and out of touch and with that, a relatively strong come back from the Bees fizzled out.
Weak defending late on, coupled with poor decision making under pressure allowed Pock to run in further tries under the posts which were easily converted allowing them to run out as worthy winners.
For the Bees it was a salient lesson in needing to get into focus from the first kick of the game and in being disciplined to take the game to the opposition.
Lots to work on again in training before our next test against a resurgent Skipton side next Sunday.
