Bees just edged by Morley

In a fairly even sided Yorkshire Cup, Bees were just edged by a Morley team who adapted better to the worsening playing conditions.
Bees Coaches were so concerned at the standing water that the Referee was consulted as to whether the pitch was fit to play on and he decided that the game should proceed.
A strong wind blowing and constant rain meant that the game would have to be played tightly.
The constant rain led to difficult ball handling but playing downhill with the wind Morley used their local knowledge and began to kick for position before taking an early lead, going 14-0 up with well taken conversions.
Bees forwards began to take control and after solid pressure, Noel Durkin marked his return to the side with a well taken try, the conversion falling short.
Thus began the pattern of the game, with Bees forwards dominant and winning plenty of ball. However, the team were clearly short of ideas on how to make strong inroads into their opponents 22.
Playing with the wind in the second half but failing to take advantage of it as Morley had done, Bees relied on their forwards to win ball but our kicking game could not open up the Morley defence.
An opportunistic try by scrum half Tom Deacon after a 5m scrum brought us back in to the game and powerful running by centre, Max Hassan on two occasions opened up the Morley defence but again Bees were unable to finish off the move before the result was put beyond us by a late Morley try, once again exploiting their all too often 2 and 3 man overlap.
Perhaps this was a game that could have been one but nevertheless there were a number of positives to take away from the game.
Playing with a weakened squad due to injuries and able to field just 16 players the boys really did play for each other with significant shifts put in by all the players and some terrific tackling that prevented further scores. Character building stuff!
Lots to work on again in training before our next test away to Wharfedale in 2 weeks.
