Proud in defeat!
After an unhealthy gap in fixtures due to a combination of opposition timetabling mix ups/weather conditions and injuries, linked to a real positive change in the team seen throughout coaching sessions this season, the first round of the Yorkshire Bowl was eagerly looked forward to by the entire team as a test to how much we had moved forward over the first eight weeks of the season.
Sadly the injury jinx struck us again with 2 late withdrawals, depleting our numbers and ensuring that we would only be able to field a team of 12 players against a strong team of 13 with 6 rolling subs.
However, we started briskly with the forwards making good ground and carrying possession beyond the oppositions 5 meter line on a number of occasions but their extra man continued to exert the pressure and we failed to convert on each occasion.
The pattern continued with Heagians scoring from break away tries as again the extra man began to tell on our boys.
In and amongst, we played some excellent rugby both up front, in the scrum and from the backs and the boys can hold their heads up high in defeat.
What is clear is that apart from a lack of game time, the U 13’s have a team that is starting to gel together with great team spirit and this bodes well as we move into a period of games between now and Christmas.
Lastly a plea!! We need players.
Injuries and non-availability will continue to happen and we need to strengthen the squad by at least 3 players. Please put the word out that we are actively recruiting both established players and beginners and that unlike clubs who may have bigger squads we can guarantee game time! The best recruiters are the players themselves, so, please bring a mate down to coaching on Wednesday or this Sunday. Remember the bars of chocolate are still available!
