Day of ups, down a bit in the middle and then end the day on a high winning Middlesborough B in the Plate final. Our first outing at 7’s and it is fair to say we all muddled our way through at times. Our first game against Old Crossleyians started pretty well, the lads grasped the concept of the 7’s against a very nippy team who beat Huddersfield in their opener. We came out winners at 12 – 0. Our next game was against a very different team, very big and very well organised Middlesborough A. Having said this the lads dug in and were leading as we headed for half time, however!! As we started the second half it was clear the Middlesbrough team had had enough of these little squirts (our boys) running them all over. They had a few very big and very fast players who began to punch holes through us despite all of our best efforts. The final score Bees 12 – 28 Middlesborough A. Our darkest game came next against our old friends Huddersfield. Despite loosing to the Old Crossleyians in their opening game they were very strong from the word go causing our lads all sorts of problems. By half time I think our lads have given up in this game and lost 35 – 7.

Due to the points difference we found ourselves in the plate final against a huge Middlesborough B team, what they lacked in speed they more than made up for in size. Having had some harsh words from ourselves (me mainly) before the game the lads realised they could do better and played very well in the Plate final. They moved the ball around the big Middlesborough players and squeezed in a few tries which was enoughfor us to win 28 -12 in the final. Interesting day, some teams definitely more suited to 7’s than others but our lads did well overall bringing home a huge trophy for their efforts. Some good performances but one player who scored a few tries from impossible positions was Will Mc, some great running Will well done, having said that, if I was being chased by some of those Middlesborough players I would find myself running from impossible positions.
