MATCH REPORT - Northallerton 13 Bradford and Bingley 35

Nick Patterson15 Sep - 08:16

Its two wins from two and Bees slot into second in the league table

Its far too early in the season to start drawing any conclusions from Bees performances in the first two weeks, but a maximum haul of ten points from those two encounters is all anyone at Wagon Lane could have asked for. After a perhaps underwhelming first forty minutes, Ali Macdonald's men dominated the second half, running in four unanswered tries and were disappointed to not run in two or three more as some desperate defending from the home side stopped Jim Nicholas, Phil Greaves and Alex Leadbeater adding further scores. Sam Wild also looked likely to get over the whitewash as his cheeky chip kick over the Northallerton defence looked likely to have given him a clear run to the line. He was clearly impeded by a Northallerton player as he shaped to collect his own kick but the referee saw nothing wrong as everyone on the Bees sideline expected at least a yellow card and possibly a penalty try.

A difficult wind whipped across the field throughout and this must have in part explained Dom Walker's lack of success with the boot as he missed 5 of his seven kicks at goal. His first attempt on 13 minutes was successful as the Bees were first on the scoresheet after 13 minutes. That three point lead lasted about seven minutes as Northallerton rallied to get the first try of the day as their forwards appeared to have set ups a dominant platform and the backline appeared sharper in attack than the Bees in the opening exchanges. A penalty arrived on the half hour to increase the home advantage to 10-3. The Bees were beginning to shake off their sluggish start and two minutes after that home penalty, Lewis Brook was able to step through a gap and barge through the final defender to dot down. Walker was not able to tack on the conversion and as half time approached another home penalty made it 13 - 8. The Bees were not finished and with perhaps the first time the ball was put through the hands in the backline, Kris Gott looked favourite to finish the move but selflessly slipped a pass to Ryan Wilson who was able to walk in for the score.

As the home side lined up behind the posts for the conversion it was clear that the efforts of the first forty had begun to sap the energy of the home pack and the Bees looked comparatively fresh as the sides turned round. The Bees began the second half down the slope with much more of a zip to their play and David Exley was able to get over the line out on the left after 47minutes. Ten minutes later the bonus point try arrived as Bees skipper, Luke Spauls crashed over. The Bees appeared to be sticking to a plan of letting the forwards run at the home defensive line and Oliver Leadbeater, Brook, Alex Leadbeater, Nicholas and substitute Austin Flaherty all broke through with some direct running. Just past the hour mark, Corey Spencer was on hand to crash over the line as Northallerton ran out of defenders to the right of the posts. With Walker adding the conversion it was 30 points to 13 to the Bees and the game clearly won. Northallerton defended gamely but were unable to break out of their own half for much of the final quarter and as time expired Alex Leadbeater was able to get over the whitewash for the final score of the game.
